Tween Lunch Ideas For the Summer
They’re home and hungry…UGH! I don’t know about you, but lunchtime during the summer is a TOTALLY different animal than lunch during the school year. My kids even packed during the year and it’s still different. What seemed to make them happy at school (a sandwich, yogurt drink, cheese stick, juice box, etc) doesn’t seem to work as well during the summer. Why, I don’t know (if you have the answer…feel free to pass it on). Right now, all I can tell you is that I have 3 kids that become monsters at lunch time.
Don’t you remember when you could make them happy with just a handful of cheerios and a sippy cup of juice? Oh to go back to those days? Actually that’s not true…I’ll be honest, I abhorred those days and I can say that now because we’re out of that stage now and no one is looking at me funny any more…wait, no? Too soon? Darn it… (just ignore what I said then…it was such a beautiful, wonderful, unicorns and rainbows time…puke!) Okay, back to lunch…
A couple things you need to know about me, I’m NOT Martha Stewart. I do a little bit on Pinterest (and I plan to share the ideas with you guys), but I’m not a really “creative” type. I’m definitely a “keep it simple” sort of gal. Second, I firmly believe my Tweens can make their own lunches. All 3 kids are old enough to be honest! They’ve been making their own lunches for school, so they can make their own lunches during the summer. But, in all fairness…I’m home, so I can be around to help. And maybe, just maybe assist in making the lunches a little more interesting that just pb&js.
I’ve been looking around and have one fabulous site worth sharing Tasty Junior. A lot of their ideas are simple enough that either your Tween can help you make them, or they can heat them up on their own. Oh and did I mention they have recipes that your kids will actually eat! You know, I’ve heard through the grape vine that’s kind of important. Maybe you are in the fortunate group and your kids will eat everything, but my Tweens and daughter…they are PICKY (at least my daughter and my oldest son at times), so finding food everyone will eat sucks! No matter how hard I try…they won’t eat: Strawberry Pecan Chicken Salad in Avocado Bowls…it ain’t happen’. Here’s an interesting catch I’ve found while searching for recipes…the recipes I’ve even found that are supposedly for “teens” are just more sophisticated than at least the palate of my tweens. But the ones for toddlers are too “baby” for my tweens. Finding this balance might be enough to drive me to drink (it’s 5:00 somewhere I know it). The trick of the game is, making toddler food LOOK/APPEAR like “older kid” food…oy (who knew just figuring out darn lunches would be so painful)
Anyway, let me share with you one way I’m going to take a dinner idea from Tasty Junior and turn it into lunch: lasagna rolls -> they can be a lunch idea if you freeze them into smaller batches. I’m betting my boys would each have 2 and my daughter would have 1. So here’s my plan of attack. Day 1 I’ll make a full batch of them (one morning allowing one of the kids to help, dear God help me now), and then separate them into sets. I would keep 5 out for lunch on day 1 and then the rest I’d pack up in groups of 5. (side note: I’ll probably see how much spaghetti sauce is used the first time I prepare them and freeze that amount of sauce for each set. This way a jar isn’t opened for just 5 rolls). So there you have it, at least 2-3 more meals (so I’m thinking that’s at least 1 meal a week for a few weeks!) SCORE!
Okay before I go any further I have to ask, was I the only mom that thought “who makes things like these things for their kids??”
Just me…okay…I knew my poor kids were so deprived…
For something that looks like a lot of fun and I know shouldn’t take too much time…check this one out: Rainbow Grilled Cheese
For more ideas I’ve got a board on Pinterest. I’ll continue to add to it all summer long. If you have ANY ideas, please, please share them! I’m ALWAYS on the look out for new places to find simple things to make!
